The day we all met at the starting point of the east end gates of Roley’s Wood, the idea of the bike ride had been scrapped and a memorial walk had been organised instead, due to the sheer volume of people who wanted to attend. I was shocked to see hundreds of people of all ages waiting to walk in honour of a beautiful girl who could have been any young woman living her life.
Living her life.
I had to keep those words in mind always and hold the memory of Lady Green close. We walked as one, almost in silence, save for the sound of birds and the wind whispering through the trees. Though I would have loved to have held Brodie’s hand, I knew his position as procurator fiscal didn’t include being out, but he was right there with me with each step I took. He walked on one side of me, Paul on the other. I don’t know who cried more—Paul and I, or Daracha’s parents.
At the last place Daracha had drawn breath, we all waited as her parish priest said a prayer and we began to light candles for her. We placed them in a giant, oversized heart on the ground. It looked sort of broken, which was fitting, I suppose. We began to sing her favourite song. I recognised Why Does it Always Rain on Me? from an episode of William and Mary and soon, even though the moment was sombre, we all began to laugh.
“Daracha’s getting the last laugh.” Her father held his hand up to sudden raindrops falling from the sky.
As was typical with most events in Edinburgh, ours ended in the pub, where Brodie graciously turned a blind eye to my massive consumption of tatties. When I caught him chatting away with my parents, I knew I’d made the right decision. I’d followed my heart. I caught his gaze and couldn’t wait to be alone with him.
When Paul and Milo took off to see a play and my parents went antique shopping with Brodie’s parents, we took advantage of our free time and hurried home. At the corner of our street, he snatched my fingers into his hand.
“God, I’ve been longing to touch you all day,” he said.
We rushed into the house. I loved its smell and inhaled deeply. Coffee, his faint cologne…and blue ribbons. The scent of blue ribbons was a fanciful notion on my part, but I could smell love and wildflowers on his face and hands as we slammed the front door closed and attacked one another.
His kisses had never been more passionate, his face more beautiful. I loved him and told him so as his tongue swept a path across my lips. We never made it into the bedroom but the hallway was fine. Just fine.
We took each other’s clothes off and smiled in the soft, pale light cast by the Victorian lampposts outside the frosted glass door.
He began kissing me—forehead, down my face, past my chin and throat—my cock getting harder as he made his way down.
